June’s Spice: Sesame seeds

One of the world’s oldest oilseed crops, sesame (also known as benne) was domesticated over 3,000 years ago. It’s native to Africa and India and was favored by humans for both its high oil content and being highly tolerant of poor growing conditions. Because of this, sesame is very common in a wide range of cuisines and has a rich, nutty flavor.
