Annual Appeal Fall 2017
In September the following letter was sent to all residents of Whitemarsh Township as well as past donors in our community:
The William Jeanes Memorial Library is celebrating its 85th Anniversary and we’re kicking off a year-long celebration this September! (You may have noticed the change to the logo above.) We began in Plymouth Meeting in 1933, and we’ve been in our present location since 1971. We continue to grow in new cardholders, number of items we circulate, and the variety of our programming. A very dedicated team of librarians and staff consistently deliver quality service to everyone who walks through our doors, and we’re hoping you’ll join us in our mission to be a resource center that serves the diverse and changing needs of the community.
We strive to offer a wide array of programming for all ages. In 2016 we held two large community events that were free to the public: Star Wars Day and Harry Potter Day. We added 5,600 new items to the collection in the past year, including new Museum Passes, Adventure Kits, and American Girl Dolls. We circulated over 192,000 items. The Library staff continues to introduce new materials to circulate to meet the needs—and interests—of the community: look for Launchpads, a bike repair kit, pre-loaded Kindles, and more coming soon.
While we continue to make all of our materials and most of our programs free to the public, we incur rising costs to deliver these products and services to the community. There are costs to all of the services we offer the public for free—including the Wi-Fi and public computer stations. We receive a portion of our funding from Whitemarsh Township and are very grateful for their continued support. The balance, though, must be made up through donations, grants, and gifts. There are many ways to the support the Library: attend a fundraiser, choose a memorial book, buy a plant or book bag, and join the Friends of the William Jeanes Memorial Library. But the best way to support the efforts of the Library is through a donation to this, our Annual Appeal. We are a 501(c)3 non-profit, and all donations are tax-deductible. Please consider donating to our Annual Appeal today. (And don’t forget to double your donation with a matching gift if your employer offers this!) Click the link here to donate online, or please stop in the Library. We’d love to hear from you!
During the Appeal, look at the bottom of your check-out receipt for the total you’ve saved in using the Library just since March. Our average adult hardcover costs $24 and the average DVD is $18. An annual pass to a local museum would cost you over $20, and much more for a family pass. Think of all the interesting materials you’ve checked out from the Library in the past year, all those great programs you attended, the free services and resources you’ve used, and all of the community members you’ve met at the Library.
On behalf of the staff, Board, and Friends, we deeply appreciate your support as we celebrate 85 years of serving the public and look to the next great milestone!
