Writing Workshop Series for Teens – Week #1
11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Teen are invited to join local author Jon McGoran for a 3-part writing workshop series!
This workshop series will take place Wednesdays on the following dates: July 18th, July 25th, and August 1st from 11-12pm.
Week #1: Character, Voice & Point of View
In this class, we will learn: How to use voice and point of view to deepen the readers’ connection to characters and immerse them more fully in your story; Tips for handling multiple points of view without confusing the reader (or the writer); and How to get the most (but not too much) out of dialogue.
Week #2: Economy & Exposition
Even experienced writers can bog down their story with exposition, or information they think the reader needs to know in order to “get” the rest of the story. But boring information dumps can drive away readers long before they get to the good part. We will learn how to identify and eliminate excessive and clunky exposition, and how to convey important information in ways that enhances your story instead of interrupting it.
Week #3: Setting & World-Building
Every story takes place somewhere in place and time, and whether it’s the street where you grew up, Victorian England, or a small planetoid off of Alpha Centauri thousands of years in the future, setting gives your story context. In this class, we’ll talk about how to create or invoke a world that is believable, understandable, compelling, and consistent, and one that makes sense for the story you are telling and the characters you are creating.
All attendees will also get a copy of Jon’s young adult book, Spliced!
Registration is required and can be done below. You only have to fill out the registration form ONCE.
This program is for teens (6th-12th grade).
Program sponsored by the Friends of the William Jeanes Memorial Library’s Nancy Corson Creative Writing Fund.
