The Bank War: Andrew Jackson, Nicholas Biddle, and the Fight for American Finance

From the idea of centralized banking and the First Bank of the United States to Jackson’s triumph, the era of “free banking,” and the creation of the Federal Reserve System, Andrew Jackson’s “war” on the American banking system sparked intense debate on the role of the federal government in banking. Dr. Paul Kahan will discuss these dramatic events and the impact on banking and our financial systems today.

Dr. Kahan earned a Ph.D. in U.S. history from Temple University. Prior to that, Dr. Kahan earned his M.A. in Modern American History & Literature from Drew University and B.A.s in history and English (with minors in medieval/Renaissance studies and music) from Alfred University.
