April is Citizen Science Month, and we’re so excited that we have the opportunity to become citizen-scientists right here at the Library! Families with school-aged children (and their younger siblings) are invited to join us as we take part in a large-scale National Science Foundation research project called Bugs in Our Back Yard!
We’ll begin inside the Library, where we’ll discuss the differences between insects and arachnids, look at some pictures of local insects, learn about the research project we’re participating in, and gather our research supplies. Then we’ll head outside to do an ecological survey: we’ll hunt for bugs and record what we discover!
Every child will be able to take home the magnifying glass they have used while they surveyed the grounds, as well as a free book and a junior entomologist “badge.”
Ms. Rachel will compile the data that each family collected and submit it to the biologists at Colby College who are conducting this important research project.
