…and I’ll make you a pie! Families with children ages 4 and up are invited to enjoy some spring fun at the Library. We’ll read Robbin Gourley’s Bring Me Some Apples and I’ll Make You a Pie, a picture book biography about Edna Lewis: pioneering chef, teacher, mentor, and cookbook author. Lewis was known as the Grande Dame of southern cooking and was among the first African American women from the south to write a cookbook that did not hide the author’s true name, gender or race.
After we learn a little about Edna Lewis from the book, we’ll get right down to business and make our very own rhubarb pie filling, using the Grande Dame’s very own recipe! While we’re working, we’ll discuss the delicious things we can grow and eat at different times of the year. Each family will make enough filling for one pie, which they can take home and put into a crust, bake, and enjoy!
This program is part of the Longwood Gardens Community Read initiative and is sponsored by the Friends of the William Jeanes Memorial Library.
