Constitution Study Group

“We the People”

2017 makes 228 years since “the federal government started to operate under the terms of the U.S. Constitution, as the Confederation Congress ceded power. However, there was a major problem with the first session of the new Congress: not enough members showed up….” (read more here.)

A 4-week, non-partisan overview of the U.S. Constitution, led by local resident Michelle Cross Smith.

Topics covered will include:

Week 1 (5/2): How Congress Works

Week 2 (5/9): Elections- What does the Constitution Say?

Week 3 (5/16): Balance of Power: The three branches & federal vs. state government

Week 4 (5/23): The Bill of Rights

Class size is limited to facilitate discussion. Please let us know if you register but are unable to attend.

A copy of the Constitution will be available to the attendees in advance. Please bring it with you to each class.

Tai-chi for Health

TAI CHI FOR HEALTH

New 8-week session begins Friday, January 6, 2017

Cost: $40 for the whole session (8 weeks)

Drop in: $10 per class

This class is for Beginners as well as Advanced Beginners.  We are currently learning the Beginning forms for the universal Yang 24 Forms.  Our classes begin with Qigong (the practice to cultivate internal energy) exercises to focus, relax, and cultivate a sense of well-being. We continue with Tai Chi warm up exercises beginning with our neck and moving to our ankles.  These forms are excellent for body alignment (proper posture), strength, flexibility, and balance.  The beautiful Tai Chi forms are gentle, slow, and continuous which gradually build stamina and coordination.  The moves can be as basic or challenging as you wish them to be. We will focus on body awareness, mindfulness, and breathing deeply and fully, all of which help to create confidence in our minds and bodies for every day living.

To get the full benefits that Tai Chi offers it is meant to be practiced daily.  DVDs and other learning materials are available to help with at home practice.

As with all new exercise programs, please consult with your doctor.  Wear comfortable clothes and shoes.  We request that you refrain from wearing any scents to class. Fee for the 8 week session is $40 payable at first class.  $10 drop in/per class.

 

This class is suitable for Beginners and Advanced Beginners.
