Instructions

v  Students in grades 1-6 can participate by writing a “book” (short story) by themselves or with a friend(s) in the same grade.  One entry per student.  The book must be the student’s own work.  Others may help with typing, but not editing.

v  The story can be on any subject, but the story must be fictional.  1st-3rd graders may (but do not have to) use one of these “story starters”:

--Imagine drinking a magic potion that makes you grow smaller.  Tell a story about how that happened and what you did when you became very small.

--Imagine you are a superhero.  What powers do you have?  Tell about one of your adventures.

v  The story can, but does not have to, be illustrated.  Use artist pencils, non-smear markers or crayons.

v   Use 8 ½ x 11 paper only.  It may be typed or hand-written.  The text should be limited to 15 pages.  Please number the pages.  For binding purposes, leave a 1” margin on every side of each page (including the cover).

v  Include a title page with the following information: the title of the story, author/illustrator’s name, grade, and school.  On a second page include the author/illustrator’s name, phone number, and e-mail address.  Include the information for each author/illustrator on both pages.

v  All the qualities of good writing (grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure) are important.

v  Stories that do not conform to these instructions will not be considered for prizes.

Judging:  Judges are active or retired educators who work/have worked outside of the Colonial School District.
